It's amazing how many of these techniques I naturally picked up teaching preschool. This is helpful. As alternative to “that reminds me of…” (something that happened to you), it’s nice to say, tell me more about that or ask for a detail about what they were talking about. When I was first learning to be a therapist, I learned that you can ask questions or make comments when a person’s talking to get them to talk more and you have choices about whether to “reach“for question about some content they were talking about or to reach for a feeling that they Expressed directly or indirectly. I don’t know if this is helpful for people and social situations, but I have gotten a lot of people to open up asking about mixed feelings or ambivalence that I might’ve noticed.

Russell reminds me of a boyfriend I once had. He had an unbelievable ability to call people out on their crap and was able to make them feel REALLY uncomfortable about it. I loved watching him do this. He was always confident and kept his cool. This allowed him to think and say exactly what was needed to be said. He’s passed away now. I miss him every day.
